Strengthening the Church

A pastor stood and announced his resignation. He explained to his church that he felt the Lord was calling him to pastor another church. He said, “Jesus called me to pastor this church, and now Jesus is calling me to a new church.” Upon hearing this, the entire church stood and began singing, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

Sermon: "The Extraordinary Seasons of Life"

The Extraordinary Seasons of Life
Luke 2:16-19

*Ill.—In our country there are several roller coaster clubs. These clubs are made up of roller coaster enthusiasts who get together and ride the best roller coasters in theme parks all across America.
These folks love the climbs to the top of the track and then the dizzying downhill plunges that carry them into steep turns.

I am not a member of a roller coaster club. I never have cared much for roller coasters.

Disciples of Love

A young boy liked a certain girl in his class and asked her if he could sit beside her. She turned him down. In spite of that, he periodically would ask her again—always with the same result. Several months later, a friend asked him about the girl. The little boy said, “She still won’t let me sit by her, but I think she’s warming up to me.” His friend asked, “What makes you think that?” The boy said, “Well, I asked her the other day if I could sit by her, and she told me that that was the last time she was going to tell me ‘no.’”

Passing on the Best That You Have Learned
Deuteronomy 33:24-27a

*Ill.—Britt Barron was a friend of mine. He was a member of our church and loved gardening like I do. I used to always borrow his tiller. He had an older Craftsman rear-tined tiller that did a great job. Whenever I borrowed it, Britt would always brag on the way it would always start. It could sit up all winter, and it would still start with a couple of pulls on the starter cord.

Wanting to Justify Ourselves

T.C. Owen was a police officer for many years in Charlotte, North Carolina. He once told about investigating a series of robberies in the city in which the same set of fingerprints showed up at the scenes of all the robberies. A search of their database revealed that the prints matched those of a man who had been arrested several years before. When the man was picked up, he steadfastly denied any involvement in the robberies. Officer Owen asked him how he could explain his fingerprints being at the scenes of these crimes.
