One summer a teenager was desperate to get a job. After looking his town over, he had turned up nothing. Then he heard of a farmer who had a small farm a few miles out of town. He went out to see the old farmer about some work, and the farmer agreed to hire him for the summer. The teenager showed up the next morning, and the farmer gave him a milk pail and a stool and told him to go to the barn and milk the cow. The teenager had never milked a cow before but figured it couldn’t be too difficult. Over an hour later he returned to the house.

In Mark Twain’s The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, Jim Smiley was addicted to gambling. He bet on anything from the time when Parson Walker’s wife would die to fights between his bulldog, Andrew Jackson, and other dogs.
I've Seen Fire and I've Seen Rain
The refrain of James Taylor’s first big hit song repeatedly declared, “I’ve Seen Fire, and I’ve Seen Rain.” So have I, but I’ve seldom seen as much rain as we had on Sunday morning. According to my gauge, we had 7.2 inches. On Friday night and Saturday, we had 2.04 inches to make a grand total of 9.24 inches for the weekend. I’d say that Sunday was the “rainy day” that we hear so much about.

The Love Burning in the Heart of God
A volcanic mountain in Iceland is named “Eyjafjallajokull.” Since I can’t pronounce the name, I decided to write about the mountain in this column instead of mentioning it in a sermon. The name means “island mountain glacier.” The mountain is one of 130 such mountains in Iceland, which is located on the fault line between the Eurasian and North American Plates.
